Guide - How To Style Skinny Jeans

When I first wore skinny jeans at my high school graduation ceremony, all my friends and family ridiculed the style – in fact, so much that I almost cried and wanted to go home and change right away.

The comeback of skinny jeans was not very successful and was dismissed as a desultory fashion. However, to everyone’s surprise, they have continued to exist ever since. Even those who were not so supportive of this fashion can’t help admiring it today.

One caveat, though: It’s not easy to rock this style. Make one wrong move and see the whole tower come crashing down. If you know what I mean.

This guide will tell you how to pick the right pair as well as how to match tops and accessories with these women’s denim jeans to help you pull off the style and earn everyone’s appreciation.

Skinny Women’s Denim Jeans

Skintight pants date back to the Tudor period when men wore breeches and hose, which were mainly intended for horse riders and mountaineers. These pants would usually end at the knees and required separate coverings for the rest of the legs.

The trend was introduced by men, as women mostly wore dresses and skirts back in the day. But then, style icons, such as Sandra Dee, Marilyn Monroe, and Audrey Hepburn adopted the trend and popularized it among women. The close-fitting women’s denim jeans had almost the same fit as the skinny pants we wear today.

Skinnies were replaced by bootcut and flared pants for brief periods of time, but then they came back – and with a bang! You can spot them in nearly all clothing stores today.

It may be a little difficult to pull them on and off, but, like everything else, looking fashionable and well-dressed needs some effort. They give you a voluptuous silhouette by highlighting your curves and edges.

How to Style Skinny Jeans

From the color of your skinny jeans to the accessories you finish them off with, there are a number of factors that need attention.

  • Pick the Right Color

When it comes to colors, we all know that bright and dark colors are for a night look and light colors are for a day look.

While men have limited options, women enjoy a wide palette, including pale, light pink, and mint. To expand the variety even further, they even have different textures and patterns, such as paisley and plaids.

For a funky daytime look, you can go in pink or the regular sky-blue with a cropped white top and white canvas shoes or patterned espadrilles.

For a formal nighttime look, go for black or dark blue with a dark top. The top doesn’t have to be a tee all the time; it could also be a full-sleeve linen or silk shirt, depending on the weather.

Furthermore, dark colors help you look slimmer. So, if you are a bit chubby and want to hide that fat, go for a dark tone. For thin legs, a light shade would work better.

In short, choosing the right color can do wonders for you.

  • Go Super Skinny

Skinny means skinny – no bagginess at all. While men should go for moderately skinny jeans (aka standard jeans) that are slightly baggy at the bottom, such as drainpipes, women should stick with what skinny means.

If your legs are too thin, and you desire a plumper look, you can go for skirts or wide-leg pants. Pants that are not a close fit are anything but skinny. Loose skinnies look like worn-out pants that have become baggier over time.

If your legs are too fat, you can either go for a regular fit that’s slightly tapered at the bottom or wear skinnies with a long top.

  • Look for Embellishments

Many women’s denim jeans feature embroidery, patchwork, and other artwork. They look cool and chic, but if you go with them, make sure your top is plain and not heavily embellished.

Embellished pockets are a good option if you have a thin figure and want to look a little curvier and chubbier.

  • Let Your Pants Hug Your Waist

Your jeans should always be a snug fit to enable you to move freely. When we talk about skinny jeans, they are the most comfortable type, contrary to what the word ‘skinny’ implies. Made from soft, stretchable denim fabric, they can adjust to any shape.

However, they are not free-size and come in different sizes, like other types of women’s denim jeans. Make sure you pick the right size for them to flatter your legs.

If you are not sure about your size, you can always find it out using a tape measure. All you need to do is tie it along your waistline and note down the number you stop at.

  • Rise Right

The rise of jeans, which is the perpendicular distance between the waistline and the crotch point, should be carefully chosen. High-rise jeans go above your navel but stay below the ribcage, mid-rise jeans hang between your navel and hip bone, and low-rise jeans are worn at the hip bone.

Low-rise jeans tend to slip off. If you don’t want to stop and tug every now and then, get your accurate fit so they can stay in place. They look good on people with a thin figure.

High-rise jeans make an excellent choice to flaunt your figure and look taller, but not everyone is comfortable with them. Also, they go best with cropped tops.

Mid-rise jeans can be worn by almost anyone and look decent.

If you have a pear-shaped figure, it may be difficult for you to find a size that will fit your waist as well as your calves. Super-skinny jeans that resemble leggings will fix you up.

  • Pair Up Appropriately

A mismatched top will play down your skinnies. The standard formula for matching a top with jeans is a light shade goes better with a dark shade. But then, it’s not set in stone, and you can go all dark- or light-colored. Just make sure they are color-coordinated.

Finish Off Well

Accessories, such as footwear, belts, and jewelry, play a major role in making an outfit a success. So, choose the right accessories, and in the right amount, to uplift your outfit.

Talking about footwear, heels, espadrilles, flats, and almost all other types go well with skinny jeans – given that they match the color of something from your outfit. Check out an extensive range of women’s wear here.
